Baldwin High School@Shubert Students Embark on Learning Exhibition at Local Firehouse

Police Science Class Learn about Career Opportunities and More!

Baldwin High School@Shubert students recently embarked on a “leaving to learn” exhibition at the local fire house. Firefighters Jerry Brown, Ed Mitchell and Tom Ryley of Ladder 2, Baldwin Fire Department discussed opportunities in both the volunteer and career fire service with the students in the Police Science course. The Baldwin students also toured the fire house, climbed into a fire truck and tried on eighty-two pounds worth of fire safety gear, from the rubber boots to the rescue gloves and fire helmet, experiencing firsthand what it is like to be a firefighter. They were intrigued by the history of the Baldwin Fire Department and the benefits of being a member of the department, specifically the free tuition for volunteer firefighters who attend Nassau Community College. The firefighters also spoke about their collaboration with the police in emergency situations, as well as the Emergency Medical Services, more commonly known as EMS.

“The students found their visit to be extremely informative and even more enjoyable than they had anticipated,” said Mr. Louis Mayr, who teaches the Police Science course. “They left with a new appreciation for the difficult job of firefighters. Some are now considering joining the Baldwin Fire Department. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and opportunity for the students to interact with members of their community who also serve the community in a positive way.”

Students who are enrolled at Baldwin High School@Shubert fulfill New York State graduation requirements by earning both academic and Career and Technical Education (CTE) credits. The program is made possible through Baldwin Union Free School District’s partnerships with Nassau BOCES and Simon Youth Foundation. The fire house learning exhibition is one of the many ways in which the Baldwin High School@Shubert’s curriculum exposes students to different career opportunities in a specific area of study, such as Police Science.
