Acts of Kindness and Generosity Are Plentiful in Baldwin UFSD

Schools Host Various Drives and Fundraisers to Help Those in Need

This school year has been marked by countless acts of kindness and generosity happening across the Baldwin Union Free School District. From community drives to fundraisers, students, their families, and staff have joined together to help those in need.

Below is just a sample of the acts of giving that have occurred this year.

Baldwin High School

Baldwin High School‘s Virtual Enterprise partnered with the Key Club for a toy drive. The toys will be donated to Baldwin elementary school families in need. The Key Club also worked with the high school social workers and staff to raise funds for gift cards to give to Baldwin families in need. They helped make the holidays brighter this year by successfully raising $2339!   

In addition, the National Honor Society partnered with the Bethany House for the month of November and collected donations of paper goods, including toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, tissues, and napkins.  

Baldwin High School@Shubert

Baldwin High School@Shubert will once again style and donate wigs to the Bethany House, while also providing assistance with resumes and donating clothing to the women in need.

Baldwin Middle School

This fall, the Student Government at Baldwin Middle School held a toy drive. They were able to collect more than 50 toys, which were then donated to the SoMWA Foundation—a non-profit organization that supports thousands of siblings cope with their mothers living with HIV or living with the loss of their mother.

Brookside Elementary School

Brookside’s Student Council ran a collection for new hats, gloves, mittens and scarves during the holidays. The items will be donated to the Bethany House.

Lenox Elementary School

The Lenox Student Council will hold a toy drive this holiday season for The John Theissen Children’s Foundation, whose mission is to help sick and underprivileged children in any capacity possible. Since 1992, the foundation has donated well over one million new gifts through their holiday toy and gift drive.

Meadow Elementary School

The Student Council at Meadow organized a major toiletry/food drive for St. Christopher’s Food Pantry, which supports families in need. They were able to collect enough to fill more than five shopping carts worth plus dozens and dozens of bags and boxes worth of nonperishable items. This effort was also highlighted in Newsday.

Plaza Elementary School

Plaza organized a “Pajama Drive,” where families were asked to donate a new pair of pajamas to The Pajama Program—an organization that helps provide families with bedtime basics, such as pajamas and books. 

Steele Elementary School

Steele’s Student Council hosted the “Holiday Comfort Food Drive.” Food baskets were assembled to provide a source of comfort for families in need, while alleviating stress over the holiday break. Each grade donated different ‘goods.’ For example, kindergartners collected “easy prep” items, like instant mac n’ cheese, while the 5th graders contributed fruit snacks.
